The Boutique · Micklegate, York

A pretty little boutique on Micklegate

Maidens & Ravens sits on historic Micklegate, through the bar walls — the traditional royal entrance to the city of York.

The Place

One of the handsomest streets in York

The street is described as one of the most handsome in York, and is home to beautiful book shops and lovely places to eat. It has been used as a location for many period dramas, thanks to the Georgian buildings and the cobbles.

When you book in with me you will have this beautiful space completely to yourself, and my aim is to give you an experience to remember. Like my dresses, I wanted the boutique to be unique, and that is reflected in everything from the wallpaper to the lighting. Look out for the ravens…

Come As You Are

Everyone is welcome at Maidens and Ravens

I have a real passion for helping all of my brides. I am a people person and am genuinely committed to helping you find a dress which makes you feel beautiful and meets your dreams!

I firmly believe there is a dress for every bride (and a bride for every dress!). I love brides of every age, shape, size and colour. I pride myself in being fully inclusive and making your appointments as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.

A Calm Space

A calm space, made for you

Small but perfectly formed, Maidens & Ravens is definitely not your traditional grey and bright white bridal shop! The vibe is colourful and pretty, a bit vintage, with a little darkness and lots of curious details. I do not do minimalist style here!

Wedding dress shopping can be loud, pressured and overwhelming. Maidens & Ravens was built to be the opposite — only ever one bride in the boutique at a time. Quiet, cosy and relaxed, private appointments and no hard sell.

If you’re autistic, sensory-sensitive, anxious, or simply someone who does better without a fuss, you’ll be looked after here without it ever being made into a thing. Brides who are a little bit different, in whatever way, have always been my people.

No silly rules, either. Try on as many dresses as you like. Take all the photos you want. No gloves, no limits, no raised eyebrows — I promise.

✦

Non-negotiables

What We Stand For

Four promises, always kept:

✦

Size is Irrelevant

I don’t talk size as our dresses are available for every body so who cares about that silly tag number. It’s not even an issue.

◆

Inclusivity

You and your guests will always be welcomed and treated with respect and kindness. This is a safe space.

✦

Genuinely Affordable

Budgets from £400 to £2,000 max. Feeling like a queen shouldn’t mean remortgaging the castle.

✦

Let’s Keep it Relaxed

Private appointments in our cosy, welcoming boutique with no hard sell or raised eyebrows.

Come As You Are

You are safe here

Come alone if you’d rather. Bring one trusted person, or a small group — whatever gives you space to breathe. I’ll be honest, I’ll be kind, and I’ll be your biggest cheerleader. You are going to look incredible.

I met Elizabeth during a styled shoot, and just knew she was who I had to go to for my own dress. She is so sweet, knowledgeable and an all round a wonderful human! Her shop feels a lot less clinical and welcoming than other bridal shops. An LGBTQIA+ positive and a neurodivergent inclusive space. I cannot adore and recommend Maidens and Ravens more.

I found maidens and ravens on Instagram around a year ago and was so excited to have my appointment! I tried on the one I had been eyeing up for ages and fell in love with it ❣️ Elizabeth let me try on many other styles and I found another gorgeous one so was a hard decision! She was so so helpful with recommendations and what could work the best with my theme x but in the end I went for the first one 🥰 can't wait to wear her x Thank you ☺️

Magic✨ I absolutely loved getting my wedding dress from Maidens & Ravens. If you're looking for something a little different from the traditional bridal experience, I couldn't recommend them enough. Elizabeth was so lovely throughout the whole process. She really listened to what I wanted and helped me create a dress that felt completely unique to me. I loved that I wasn't limited to an off-the-peg design and was able to personalise my dress with alterations such as off-the-shoulder straps, a leg split and deciding on the train. It made my dress feel truly one of a kind. Communication was great throughout, and Elizabeth kept me updated when my dress arrived. She also arranged for my dress and veil to be taken straight to the seamstress ready for my first fitting, making the whole process so much easier. Thank you so much for helping me find my dream dress. I felt absolutely amazing wearing it, and it was everything I had hoped for. I would highly recommend Maidens & Ravens to anyone looking for a beautiful, unique wedding dress and a personal bridal experience.

I couldn't be happier with the service from Elizabeth throughout the whole process, and the end result of my dress is just phenomenal. I was so scared of going into a bridal boutique that I was going to just buy online until my auntie found this fabulous alternative place. I was so scared of not being able to find one that would fit me, or being made to feel frumpy as some fashion retailers can. However, all those worries melted away as soon as I got there. Elizabeth made me feel so welcome and made the atmosphere so relaxed and informal. I absolutely loved the quirky decor too. Special shout out to the fabulous raven! So far removed from overly white and clinical bridal boutiques that I wouldn't be seen dead in! The dresses are so varied in style and size. She asked me what sort of styles I was looking for, and then just handed me dresses to try on without even telling me what size they were, so I was able to just have fun playing dress up without feeling self conscious or worrying about sizes. She's very inclusive, and she'll more than likely find you things in all sorts of styles to try on whatever size you are, but if you're worried you can always ring and make sure she has specific sizes in certain styles in advance. She really does go above and beyond to give you an amazing experience. I found that I loved the style and colour of the Samara dress, but that I loved the flowers on the Stevie dress, and I wanted short sleeves; so Elizabeth was able to mix and match to have this bespoke piece made for me at an entirely reasonable price (no more than I would have paid for the Samara dress as it was). I couldn't have asked for a better dress, and the service really took away all the fear and made the experience really fun. I'd highly recommend Elizabeth and Maiden & Ravens to anyone.

OMG. No words can express how lovely Elizabeth is and her dresses. I had a lovely day 27th June, trying a selection on. There is so many amazing dresses, all unique and it was hard narrowing down my favourites, that was until I tried on “The One”. I was instantly In Love with it. The shop and Owner definitely work well, relaxed atmosphere and made to feel welcome from the moment the door opened to it was closed. Thank you so much in helping we choose my dream dress, I am so looking forward to wearing it on my wedding day.

As the mother of the bride-to-be, I cannot recommend Maidens & Ravens highly enough. From the moment we arrived, Elizabeth was incredibly kind, caring and thoughtful. She made the whole appointment feel so special, relaxed and fun, creating wonderful memories for us both. Her warmth and genuine enthusiasm immediately put my daughter at ease and helped boost her confidence throughout the experience. Elizabeth has a stunning selection of dresses and an impressive knowledge of her stock. It was clear to see her real passion for helping brides find the dress that feels right for them. She listened carefully, offered honest advice, and made my daughter feel beautiful every step of the way. We had a fantastic time during our appointment and left feeling excited, happy and truly looked after. Thank you, Elizabeth, for making such an important milestone such a wonderful experience. I would absolutely recommend Maidens & Ravens to any bride-to-be looking for a personal, caring and unforgettable dress-shopping experience.

Travelled 4 hours to visit this bridal shop and I was not disappointed! It exceeded my expectations which the choices of dress, I had no idea how customisable the dresses would be too! The whole experience was amazing and fun, but the best part of it was being assisted by Elizabeth. She truly understands alternative brides and helps you find your dream dress, I guarentee you will not find a better dress shop than this. The follow up communication after visiting was amazing too, Elizabeth truly takes so much time to look after you and make you even more excited about the experience x

Elizabeth could not have been more helpful and friendly. She has a beautiful selection of dresses to suit everyone, particularly if like me you don't want a conventional white dress. Definitely worth a visit in person as there's even more in store and Elizabeth has great advice about how dresses can be altered or what colours are available. I managed to find my perfect dress as you can see!

Frequently Asked Questions

Booking & appointments

Yes — we’re open by appointment so the boutique is entirely yours while you’re here, with no strangers wandering in mid-try-on. Use the booking button and I’ll be in touch within a working day.

No. Appointments are free and I don’t take deposits. I only ask that you let me know as soon as possible if you can’t make it, so I can offer the slot to another bride.

There isn’t one — some brides buy two years out, some at the last minute. Do leave time for fitting appointments. Treasure Trove dresses can be bought off the peg, but there’s only one of each, so don’t dawdle if you fall in love. Commissioned for You dresses take around four months, so ideally come in at least eight months before the wedding for all the options.

Dresses, sizing & style

Not even slightly. Alternative styles are exactly what we do. If the classic white-dress-and-veil isn’t you, the Raven Collection and our colourful, unconventional designs might be. And if you have something specific in your head, we can help you create it.

I get it completely, and please don’t worry. I’ve seen every shape, size, age and style, and I promise there’s a dress for you — my job is to find it. You’ll have plenty of privacy, the boutique to yourself, and me firmly on your side. I am not one of those stuffy, look-down-your-nose ladies.

Yes. We have dresses to try across a wide range of sizes in the boutique, and our made-to-order gowns can be ordered in any size, without restriction.

Bringing people (and nerves)

Of course. One or two trusted, supportive people can be lovely — we have seating for three alongside you. I’d gently steer you away from a big group, though; too many opinions can become overwhelming.

That’s absolutely fine — come alone. Some of my favourite appointments have been one-to-one; they tend to be calmer, with far more room to explore what you love rather than what everyone else thinks. I’ll look after you.

Ask yourself what you need on the day: a supportive voice, not a critical one. You’re welcome to book in alone first to narrow things down, then bring her to see your final few. I won’t have body shaming in the boutique, and I’m happy to tactfully remind anyone that it’s about you and what makes you feel wonderful. I’m on your side.

Buying, deposits & alterations

For dresses off the peg, you’ll usually pay when you buy. For Commissioned for You dresses, it’s a 50% deposit to place the order and the balance when it arrives.

By their nature, no — all dresses are non-refundable. If you have concerns, talk to me; I’ll always do my best to help.

Almost every dress needs some alteration. We work closely with several excellent local seamstresses and will pass on their details at your appointment — though you’re free to use your own.

Finding Us

Getting here, and getting in

Our nearest carpark is Nunnery Lane, and we are about five minutes’ walk from the train station. If you are driving in from out of York, the park and ride is advisable. There is some limited paid parking on Micklegate and Priory Street, up to two hours, on a first come first served basis.

As with much of York, our building is old, and the entrance to the shop is a little narrow. There is one very low step to get inside, which is still accessible by wheelchair and with a buggy.

I will always do whatever I can to help, so please do ask if you need any specific assistance.
