About the Boutique · Micklegate, York

Anything but ordinary

A curious little bridal boutique on historic Micklegate, where alternative brides find a dress — and a welcome — that was never cut from the ordinary cloth. Every body, every love story, one bride at a time.

Hello, I’m Elizabeth

I'm the founder, owner & resident bridal maven

By day — and still — I’m a family lawyer, helping people through divorces since 2003. Perhaps an odd path to a wedding dress boutique, but I’ve always had another side: a love of art, of making things, of sewing and vintage clothes.

Growing up in Edinburgh I haunted the charity shops for 60s and 70s dresses to have taken in just for me. My prom dress was a reworked 1980s bridesmaid gown — mint green, puff sleeves, lace — because what I really wanted was to look like Sarah in the ballroom scene of Labyrinth, ribbons in my hair and all. Maidens & Ravens grew out of that: a boutique for brides who never saw themselves in the traditional white-dress-and-veil version of the day.

The Place

A curious little boutique on Micklegate

You’ll find us through the bar walls — the traditional royal entrance to the city — on one of the handsomest streets in York, all Georgian frontages and cobbles, used so often as a period-drama film location you may recognise it before you arrive.

Small but perfectly formed, Maidens & Ravens is emphatically not your traditional grey-and-white bridal shop. The vibe is colourful and pretty, a little vintage, with a thread of darkness and no end of curious details. I do not do minimalist here. When you book in, the whole space is yours — one bride at a time, no browsers wandering through. Just you, the dresses, and me. And if you keep your eyes open, you’ll spot the ravens.

Two worlds to draw from

Maiden

Straight out of a fairytale — ethereal, floral, sparkling and romantic. Medieval queens and faerie-core forests, ballgowns and soft enchantment.

Two worlds to draw from

Raven

The dark side — gothic, witchy, dramatic and mysterious. Deep colours and black lace, corsetry and cathedral trains, for brides who want a little shadow with their romance.

Doing things properly

A good place, not just a pretty one

Everyone's welcome

Same-sex couples, second and third chapters, every body and every budget. If you never fit the ordinary mould of a bride, you’ll fit right in here.

Sustainable by nature

One-off gowns, vintage finds and made-to-order pieces — kinder to the planet, and unlike anything else walking down the aisle that year.

Fair & ethical

Real care for the people who walk through the door, and for the makers behind the dresses. Fairness runs through everything I do here.

Love Letters

“I never wanted a white dress and never fit the ‘bride’ mould. My gown felt like it was made for the person I actually am.”

Rowan · married in the Dales

“Elizabeth adapted everything to my body and my ideas. No pressure, no time limit, just tea and honesty. Second wedding, first time I felt like me.”

Mara · York

“We’re two brides and every other boutique made us feel like a novelty. Here we were just… a couple in love, being fussed over. Perfect.”
